Scripture – “One day as Jesus was teaching the people in the temple courts and proclaiming the good news, the chief priests and the teachers of the law, together with the elders, came up to him. “Tell us by what authority you are doing these things,” they said. “Who gave you this authority?” He replied, “I will also ask you a question. Tell me: John’s baptism—was it from heaven, or of human origin?” They discussed it among themselves and said, “If we say, ‘From heaven,’ he will ask, ‘Why didn’t you believe him?’ But if we say, ‘Of human origin,’ all the people will stone us, because they are persuaded that John was a prophet.” So they answered, “We don’t know where it was from.” Jesus said, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I am doing these things.””
Luke 20:1-8 NIV
Observation – Jesus was teaching and the chief priests and teachers of the law along, with the elders, asked Jesus who gave him the authority to teach and do miracles. In response Jesus asked them a question. They wouldn’t answer because they entered into this discussion, not to seek truth, but to fulfill their agenda so Jesus wouldn’t answer their question.
Application – Many people say they keep their mind open to new ideas. My observation is that people are open to new ideas within the realm of their worldview. Once an idea conflicts or challenges what they have firmly established in their mind as “truth” they become closed minded and defensive in protecting “their truth”. Truth is truth whether a person believes it or not.
Prayer – Jesus, I pray for all of my family and friends who don’t yet acknowledge that you are the way, the truth and the life. I pray that they would explore the claims you make about yourself in the Bible and that they come to the conclusion that you love them, died for them and desire a deep relationship with them.
