Scripture – ““No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money.” The Pharisees, who loved money, heard all this and were sneering at Jesus. He said to them, “You are the ones who justify yourselves in the eyes of others, but God knows your hearts. What people value highly is detestable in God’s sight.”
Luke 16:13-15 NIV
Observation – Jesus makes it clear you can’t have two masters because you will love one and hate the other or be devoted to the one and despise the other. The Pharisees were angry because they loved money and they thought they loved God. Jesus told them that God knew their hearts and informed them what was highly value in people’s sight was detestable to God.
Application – Very few people would admit they are like the Pharisees in regards to their love for money. Money can replace God as our provider and sustainer in our hearts if we aren’t careful. While it is wise to plan and think of the future, it is foolish to believe that, whatever our number is, the amount we believe we need to have in order to “not worry”, that life is secure. Is not life more than than food and the body more than clothes. If your master is money, confess this to Jesus and ask him to be your master and to help you look at money as a resource to build his kingdom.
Prayer – Lord, help us to fix our eyes on you, not on our finances, for eternal security and strength for today. Amen.
