Scripture – ““Consider how the wild flowers grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today, and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will he clothe you—you of little faith! And do not set your heart on what you will eat or drink; do not worry about it. For the pagan world runs after all such things, and your Father knows that you need them. But seek his kingdom, and these things will be given to you as well. “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom. Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”
Luke 12:27-34 NIV
Observation – Jesus is instructing us about the kingdom of man versus the kingdom of God. One kingdom is small, physical and temporary, the other is unlimited, spiritual and eternal. Jesus warns us to not waste our mental and physical energy pursuing things that God will give us anyway because he cares for us and knows we need them.
Application – Jesus tells us a life focused on God will be about building his kingdom and not our kingdom. There can only be one king in a kingdom, if we are claiming allegiance to Jesus he is our king and we are his subjects. If we say that we like Jesus a lot and he is pretty great but we don’t do what he says then what is he to us?
Prayer – Lord, help us to see what Joshua clearly understood, “But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.”” If Joshua were spending time with us today he might have said, ““But if serving the Lord seems undesirable to you, then choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve, whether your career, your net worth, your status, your company, your safety, your leisure or the approval of those in whose land you are living. But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord.””
