Scripture – “When Jesus had finished speaking, a Pharisee invited him to eat with him; so he went in and reclined at the table. But the Pharisee was surprised when he noticed that Jesus did not first wash before the meal. Then the Lord said to him, “Now then, you Pharisees clean the outside of the cup and dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. You foolish people! Did not the one who made the outside make the inside also? But now as for what is inside you—be generous to the poor, and everything will be clean for you.”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭11‬:‭37‬-‭41‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – A Pharisee invited Jesus to share a meal and the Pharisee was surprised that Jesus didn’t wash his hands before the meal. Jesus accused the Pharisees of only being concerned with outward appearances and neglecting their inward condition, their hearts. Jesus tells them they are wicked and greedy and instructs them to part with their money and give it to the poor as a way of repenting and becoming clean.

Application – How is your inward self? Do you look good on the outside but inwardly are you greedy, bitter, unforgiving, judgemental and selfish? Jesus commands us to take our eyes off ourselves and focus on others that are less fortunate as a way to become clean in his sight. Full repentance only comes from confessing our sins and asking Jesus to forgive us. Taking care of the poor is a visible way that demonstrates that we are clean inwardly.

Prayer – Lord, it is easy to try and look good on the outside but to be broken on the inside. I pray that we would all come to you and ask for help to live a congruent holy life. Amen.
