Scripture – ““I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. “You shall have no other gods before me. “You shall not make for yourself an image in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the parents to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments.”

‭‭Deuteronomy‬ ‭5‬:‭6‬-‭10‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Moses is reminding the Israelites of the Ten Commandments that God gave to them to follow and obey. The first two are you shall have no other gods before me and you shall not make an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on earth below. Moses reminds them that God is a jealous God and he punishes those who hate him and shows love to those who love him and keep his commandments.

Application – It is common for people to say as long as you believe in something, that is good or that all religions basically teach the same thing. God says that he is the Lord and worshipping any other god or anything other thing is sin. There is only one God and he reveals himself as the dynamic relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Their relationship makes up who God is. Another way of describing the trinity is there is one “what” which is God, revealed through three “who’s” the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians don’t worship three gods, we worship one God that has revealed himself through the relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Worship of any other “god” is a violation of the first commandment.

Prayer – Lord, I pray for all of us to worship you alone for you are great and are worthy of our praise. Amen.
