Scripture – “But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.”

‭‭1 Timothy‬ ‭6‬:‭6‬-‭8‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Paul is saying there is great achievement in pursuing godliness and living a life of contentment because when we die we leave everything behind. Investing your life in the acquisition of material things is unwise because it is temporal. Paul says he will be content with just food and clothing.

Application – The purpose of this passage is to emphasize that we will die one day, that our material possessions will stay on this earth and that our efforts should be directed towards things that please God. As human beings we obviously need food, clothing, vehicles, homes, medical care, education and many other things to live on this earth. The problem with most of us is we live, and prioritize our time and energy, as if we believe that we will live forever on this planet. Scripture teaches that we are here for a short amount of time and will be either in heaven or hell for eternity. With this in mind we should invest in things that last forever, not just while we are here.

Prayer – Lord, I pray I would keep this in mind all the time so that my decisions impact eternity. Amen.
