Scripture – “(All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John. But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.)”

‭‭Luke‬ ‭7‬:‭29‬-‭30‬ ‭NIV‬‬

Observation – Even the tax collectors when they heard Jesus words acknowledged that God’s way was right because they had humbled themselves and been baptized by John but the Pharisees and experts in the law rejected God’s purposes for their lives because they had not humbled themselves and been baptized by John.

Application – God hates pride and arrogance. In order to be accepted by Jesus one must recognize that they have broken God’s law and sinned against him. If you think you are a great person that occasionally makes a mistake, you don’t need a savior you just need an example or a good teacher, someone to guide you along in life’s journey. You certainly don’t need someone to die in your place on a cross and take your sin upon themselves. The Pharisees and experts in the law didn’t think they needed a savior, they thought they were doing pretty good. This is precisely why Jesus talks so much about our hearts and actions not just our outward appearance.

Prayer – Lord Jesus, thank you for bring believers into the lives of non-believers to show them that they need a savior and not a guru or good teacher. Amen.
