Scripture – “The law from your mouth is more precious to me than thousands of pieces of silver and gold.”
Psalms 119:72 NIV
Observation – The writer is proclaiming that he values God’s word more than great wealth.
Application – When my kids were young we discussed a verse that is similar to Psalm 119:72 from Proverbs Chapter 3, “Blessed are those who find wisdom, those who gain understanding, for she is more profitable than silver and yields better returns than gold. She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her.” I asked them what they would rather have, wisdom from God or silver, gold and rubies. They answered they would rather have God’s wisdom because if they had that they could acquire all the riches they could ever want and then they would have wisdom and wealth. They are right, and I believe that is how most people think, but God is trying to teach us that there is no comparison between the two. Thousands of pieces of silver and gold are great, and money can get you a lot of things in this life, but it can’t tell you how to live a righteous life, it won’t save you from an adulterous woman, wicked men or the coming judgement.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, I pray that all of your followers would be able to pray Psalm 119:72 with complete honesty, and if they can’t I pray you continue to work on their hearts. Amen.
