Scripture – “For Herod himself had given orders to have John arrested, and he had him bound and put in prison. He did this because of Herodias, his brother Philip’s wife, whom he had married. For John had been saying to Herod, “It is not lawful for you to have your brother’s wife.” So Herodias nursed a grudge against John and wanted to kill him. But she was not able to, because Herod feared John and protected him, knowing him to be a righteous and holy man. When Herod heard John, he was greatly puzzled; yet he liked to listen to him.”
Mark 6:17-20 NIV
Observation – King Herod put John the Baptist in prison because Herod had married his brother’s wife and John the Baptist judged him for it and said it was unlawful. When John was in prison King Herod like to listen to him but what John would say puzzled him.
Application – Many people like to have spiritual conversations and discuss our purpose on earth and what or who God may be. This is fine for a time but God isn’t satisfied with us confining him as an intellectual or philosophical pursuit. Jesus says about himself, “He said to me: “It is done. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of life. Those who are victorious will inherit all this, and I will be their God and they will be my children. But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practice magic arts, the idolaters and all liars—they will be consigned to the fiery lake of burning sulfur. This is the second death.””
Revelation 21:6-8 NIV. Jesus demands a decision, you are either for him or against him.
Prayer – Jesus, I pray that you continue to draw people into a relationship with you so they don’t face the second death. Amen.
