Scripture – “So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. Suddenly Jesus met them. “Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. Then Jesus said to them, “Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.” Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.””
Matthew 28:8-10, 16-20 NIV
Observation – Jesus has come back from the dead and when he sees the women that went to his tomb they worship him, when Jesus sees the eleven disciples they also worship him. In both cases Jesus accepts their worship and commands his disciples to make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Application – Anytime in scripture when someone bows down to worship a godly man or an angel that man or angel rebukes them and tells them to worship God alone. Jesus accepts their worship because he is God. God is described in Matthew 28:19 as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Christians worship one God who has revealed himself through the relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. There are not three Gods but one God. Another way of explaining the Trinity is there is one “what” God and three “who’s” the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The relationship between the Father, Son and Holy Spirit is who God is. If Christians said there is one “who” and three “who’s” that would be contradictory but that is not how God is defined, there is one “what”, God and three “who’s” The Father, Son and Holy Spirit. When other religions say that they worship the Father but not the Son or Holy Spirit Jesus says that they are rejecting the one true God, “No one who denies the Son has the Father; whoever acknowledges the Son has the Father also.”
1 John 2:23 NIV
Prayer – Jesus, thank you for revealing yourself to us so that we can have a personal relationship with the God that made us and loves us. Amen.
