Scripture – “Shortly before dawn Jesus went out to them, walking on the lake. When the disciples saw him walking on the lake, they were terrified. “It’s a ghost,” they said, and cried out in fear. But Jesus immediately said to them: “Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.” “Lord, if it’s you,” Peter replied, “tell me to come to you on the water.” “Come,” he said. Then Peter got down out of the boat, walked on the water and came toward Jesus. But when he saw the wind, he was afraid and, beginning to sink, cried out, “Lord, save me!” Immediately Jesus reached out his hand and caught him. “You of little faith,” he said, “why did you doubt?” And when they climbed into the boat, the wind died down. Then those who were in the boat worshiped him, saying, “Truly you are the Son of God.””
Matthew 14:25-33 NIV
Observation – Jesus disciples were rowing across a lake when Jesus came towards them walking on the water. They were alarmed and thought they saw a ghost, Jesus told them it was him and then Peter got out of the boat and began walking toward Jesus. When Peter took his eyes off Jesus and focused on the conditions surrounding him he freaked out and began to sink. Jesus saved him, told him he had little faith and asked why he doubted. When Jesus got in the boat the wind died down and his disciples worshipped him. Jesus accepted their worship and did not tell them, like the angel in Revelation, that they should only worship God alone. Jesus is God so he gladly accepted their worship.
Application – How often in our everyday lives do we take our eyes off Jesus and forsake his commands and doubt because of the conditions surrounding us. This doesn’t just happen when it comes to witnessing to people but even in simple things like inviting a neighbor over for dinner or making a sales call. It happens when we are called to talk to a friend about a difficult situation and we only focus on all the bad that could happen and don’t trust God to work through us. This happens because we don’t trust God like we should. When fear rises up talk to Jesus and remember his power.
Prayer – Lord Jesus, give me 100% focus on you today. What an incredible gift you give us each day, to live in the present and not to worry about tomorrow or dwell on the past. I pray that when I’m home 12 hours from now that you are pleased with my faith in you. Amen.
