Scripture – “He who answers before listening— that is his folly and shame.”
Proverbs 18:13 NIV
Observation – God says that it is foolish and shameful to give an answer before listening fully to what the other person is saying.
Application – Listen intently when another person is speaking and ask lots of questions so that you have a full understanding of what they are communicating and their desired outcome. This honors the other person, you show love to someone by respecting them and acknowledging what they are saying is important. Additionally it helps you gather information that will help you help them. Being a thoughtful listener enables you to build a strong relationship with another person because they know you care for them.
Prayer – Dear Jesus, help me to ask two or three more questions after I think I understand what the person I am talking to is saying, don’t let me establish a false sense of urgency that keeps me from honoring them by listening intently.
