Scripture – “Surely God will bring you down to everlasting ruin: He will snatch you up and pluck you from your tent; he will uproot you from the land of the living. The righteous will see and fear; they will laugh at you, saying, “Here now is the man who did not make God his stronghold but trusted in his great wealth and grew strong by destroying others!””
Psalms 52:5-7 NIV
Observation – The man who trusts in his wealth instead of God and uses his power to only enrich himself rather that helping others will be brought down to everlasting ruin by God. As Johnny Cash sings, “you can go on for a long time, you can go on for a long time, you can go on for a long time but sooner or later he is going to cut you down, soon or later God is going to cut you down”
Application – Wealth is a tool to be used, not a God to be worshipped. No one would ever admit to bowing down to their investments or their passive cash flow but a tree is known by its fruit. What a great test wealth is to determine what is in the heart of man. A Godly man will use his wealth to expand God’s kingdom through giving to the Church, missionaries, feeding the poor and helping those in need. Once he can move from making a living to building wealth he will redirect his efforts to investing in others so they can learn a skill and serve their clients, provide for their families and have something left over to help others. The wicked man deceives himself with his lips by saying we should help those in need and by his actions by giving a little here and there, serving on a board now and then, but his heart is far from God because he secretly lights candles and burns incense to money, his true god.
Prayer – Dear Jesus, I pray those that know you would trust you and would use the gift of wealth, that you give to people, to expand your kingdom so that the lost would be found and you would be glorified. Amen.
