Scripture – “The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me. The cords of the grave coiled around me; the snares of death confronted me. In my distress I called to the Lord; I cried to my God for help. From his temple he heard my voice; my cry came before him, into his ears. He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters. He rescued me from my powerful enemy, from my foes, who were too strong for me. They confronted me in the day of my disaster, but the Lord was my support. He brought me out into a spacious place; he rescued me because he delighted in me.”
Psalms 18:4-6, 16-19 NIV
Observation – In verses 4-6 David is convinced that he will be overcome by his enemies and he cries out to God for help. David tells us that God heard him. In verses 16-19 David describes how God rescued him from his enemies. His enemies tried to kill him but the Lord was his support. David goes on to say that God brought him from certain death into a spacious place because God delighted in him.
Application – Jesus assures us in John 16:33 that in this world we will have trouble. But we should take heart because he has overcome this world. If we expect that life is going to be smooth all the time with no obstacles or adversity and then wonder where God is in all of it we’ve created a false expectation based on things God never promised us. Instead of asking why you are going through a difficult time call out to God and thank him for being with you during the storm.
Prayer – I love you, O Lord, my strength. The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock in whom I take refuge. He is my shield and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold. I call to the Lord who is worthy of praise, and I am saved from my enemies. Amen.
