Scripture – “By your hand save me from such men, from men of this world whose reward is in this life.”
Psalms 17:14a NIV
Observation – David is asking God to protect him from wicked men who are trying to harm him. He describes them as “men of this world, whose reward is in this life.” David is distinguishing between men who follow God and men who do not. Men who store up treasures in heaven versus men who only care about storing up treasures on earth. They will get the reward they seek in this life but that is the only reward they will receive.
Application – Our resources are finite, we only have a certain amount of time, energy and money so we need to be discerning in how we invest them. A Godly man works hard and is excellent at what he does which allows him to earn enough to provide for his family and be generous. He also understands there are things that don’t survive past our lives on earth and things that are eternal and he invests his resources wisely. See Matthew 6:19-21.
Prayer – Dear Jesus, give me a heart and motivation towards things that last for eternity
